Offseason
- December 8, 1980: Dan Spillner was signed as a free agent by the Indians.[1]
- December 9, 1980: Gary Alexander, Víctor Cruz, Rafael Vásquez, and Bob Owchinko were traded by the Indians to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Bert Blyleven and Manny Sanguillén.[2]
Regular season
- May 15, 1981: Len Barker pitched a perfect game against the Toronto Blue Jays. It was the tenth perfect game ever pitched, is one of only seventeen in the history of the major leagues, and remains the last no-hitter thrown by an Indian.[3] In that season he also was selected an All-Star.
