History

WiSolar was founded by Tonye Irims in 2016[3] as an inverter OEM with proprietary remote shut-off feature and solar installer.[4] It transitioned into a solar electricity company in 2019.

WiSolar embarked on an initiative in March 2017 to promote solar energy awareness in South Africa through an initiative called "Solar Scholar". The clean energy initiative in its first phase visited educational institutions across the country to educate staff and students on clean energy in homes. As part of the campaign, WiSolar is also developing an online platform that educational institutions can use to register on the "Solar Scholar" program. The online platform can also be used by students to register and submit ideas on solar energy.[5]

In July 2019, WiSolar proposed to raise $40M in debt and equity for the accelerated roll-out of prepaid solar electricity in South Africa and Nigeria.[6][7] The company began development of its prepaid solar electricity prototype with the objective of eliminating environment polluting fuel generators in Nigeria with its main focus on Lagos, Abuja, Enugu, Abia, Imo, Anambra, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo and Rivers states.[8][9]

In November 2019, WiSolar announced plans to upskill the electrical engineering graduates of its solar academy with a solar electricity layer in order to enhance internal capabilities.[10] In March 2020, the company partnered with LG for high efficiency black photovoltaic panels in a bid to make the electronics giant a provider of solar panels for WiSolar and the company's customers[11]

WiSolar has expanded its operations in South Africa by establishing the Gateway Office in Bronkhorstspruit[12][13] and in June 2020, it started offering solar financing to make solar electricity more main stream in South Africa.[14][15]
