Distribution and habitat
It is endemic to the Dominican Republic (it was once found in Haiti, but is now extirpated there) on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, subtropical or tropical swamps, subtropical or tropical moist montane forests, and plantations. It is threatened by habitat loss.
Taxonomy
It was formerly considered a subspecies of the now-outdated grey-headed quail-dove, but was split into its own species in 2004 following a reassessment of the taxonomy.
