Typhoon Louise (1955)
Typhoon Louise was a powerful typhoon that struck Japan in September 1955.[1][2] Louise formed on September 20 as a weak tropical depression in the east of Mariana Islands.[3] Louise intensified into a tropical storm in the morning of September 21, and by the morning of the next day Louise intensified into a typhoon.[3] In September 24, Louise rapidly intensified into a Category 5 super typhoon with winds of 282 km/h (175 mph) and the pressure of 930 mbar. Louise would transition into a strong extratropical cyclone while in Sea of Japan in the evening of September 30. Extratropical remnants of Louise dissipated in Bering Sea on October 2.[3]

In Japan, 54 people were killed and 14 went missing.[4] After extratropical transition in October 1, winds from Louise fanned the fires that would cause destruction in downtown Niigata, Japan.[5]
Meteorological history
In September 20, a tropical depression was formed southeast of Mariana Islands.[3]
Impact
In Yakushima, wind gusts of 63 m/s (140 mph) was recorded.[6]
After transitioning into an extratropical cyclone, winds of the typhoon fanned the fires that broke out on Niigata in October 1.[5]
