Tobias G. Natter
Tobias G. Natter (born 26 May 1961 in Dornbirn, Vorarlberg) is an Austrian art historian and internationally renowned art expert particularly for "Vienna around 1900".
Career
Natter studied at the universities of Innsbruck, Munich and Vienna and graduated with a PhD in 1988. He began his museum career at the Historisches Museum Wien, after which he spent 15 years with the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere in Vienna, finally serving as the institution's head curator. Natter also acted as a frequent consultant and guest curator for the Jewish Museum Vienna, which was re-established in 1990. In 2001, he realized an exhibition on Oskar Kokoschka as the first major loan exhibition to be held by the Neue Galerie New York. From 2006 through 2011, as director of Vorarlberg Landesmuseum (Vorarlberg State Museum), Natter was in charge of the new building and was responsible for changing the museum’s substantive focus. Subsequently, from 2011 until 2013, he held the position of artistic director of the Leopold Museum in Vienna, where he succeeded in attracting a wider audience with exhibitions such as naked men (2012–13). On October 28, 2013 he declared his dismission from this function due to turbulences with his CFO Peter Weinhäupl and Weinhäupl's involvement with the Gustav Klimt Wien 1900 Privatstiftung featuring the Klimt collection of Gustav Ucicky, a prominent figure of NS film-making.[1]
In 2014 he founded Natter Fine Arts, a company specializing in the development of exhibitions as well as the estimation and evaluation of art works. Most recently he curated as CEO of Natter Fine Arts exhibitions for the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt with a second venue at the Albertina Wien (2016/17), for the Neue Galerie New York (2017), the Belvedere Wien (2016 and 2017) and the Fine Arts Museums San Francisco (2017/18). Natter was appraising amongst others the artistic bequest of the Austrian painters Maria Lassnig and Ernst Fuchs. In the course of his extensive publication activities, he published the current catalogue raisonné of the paintings by Gustav Klimt (2012) and Egon Schiele (2017) both of which are available in several languages.
Awards
