Tobias Broeker

Tobias Broeker (8 November 1976 in Gronau) is a German classical music researcher and publisher.

Life and work

Around the year 2000 Tobias Broeker started to research about the compositions for solo violin and orchestra of the 20th century. Over the next years he built one of the most comprehensive recording archives for modern violin concertos.[1] The information derived from this research led to the publication of the encyclopedia The 20th century violin concertante in 2014. The book "is a compendium of works that were written in and around the twentieth century featuring the violin in a solo role against an ensemble or other instrument(s). The catalogue lists compositions by composer, in alphabetical order. With four to six records presented per page, the e-book spans over 2,700 pages."[2] The work was published only in electronical form as an ebook and was incorporated into the RILM Music Encyclopedias in 2018.[3]

Furthermore, Tobias Broeker runs a publishing project for (mostly violin) compositions of neglected or little known composers. Compositions that only exist in manuscript are typeset and published through his website. Publications were made in cooperation with national libraries and archives like the Baden State Library, Saxon State and University Library Dresden, Bavarian State Library or National Széchényi Library and led to scores of composers like Josef Schelb, Siegfried Geissler, Carlos Veerhoff or Albert Siklos.[4] In addition the archive of Tobias Broeker also contains original manuscripts and autographs like the main musical estates of Claude Pascal, Ernst Riemann, Phyllis Gummer, Adolf Sigmundt, Helmut May, Erich Keller, a large collections of manuscripts by Carlos Veerhoff and many individual autographs by different composers. And Tobias Broeker also publishes violin compositions by active composers like Karen De Pastel, Wolfgang Gabriel, Karim Elmahmoudi, Alla Penkina, Tome Mancev, Daniel Felsenfeld, Riccardo Riccardi or Tison Street.

In 2016 Tobias Broeker discovered that the Violin concerto by Tristan Foison is identical to the Symphonie concertante pour violon et orchestre of the French composer Raymond Gallois-Montbrun.[5]

Tobias Broeker is also the dedicatee of the revised version of the Violin concerto by Australian composer Barry McKimm,[6] the Violin concerto No.3 by Finnish composer Eero Järvilehto[7] and the composition Visions du Mont Fuji, pour violon et piano by French composer Colette Mourey.[8]

Beside his musical research is Tobias Broeker a studied teacher for students with learning and speaking disabilities.[9] He actually lives in Stuttgart (Germany) and works there at a special school.
