The lexicon of Uj Idők
The lexicon of Uj Idők (Hungarian "Uj Idők lexikona) it was a large-scale lexicon in Hungarian that appeared at 1930s.
History
The lexicon of Uj Idők was one of the major cultural publications of the period between the two world wars. The idea came from the editors of a well-known contemporary magazine, Uj Idők (english: New Age). In the Foreword, the editorial board addressed “the reader to whom he intended this work as a gift, the most far-reaching of all his works, for fifty years. I would like to thank the reader, with this twenty-volume, original lexicon in every taste, for his faithful adherence to the concept of life and worldview for decades, which New Times started to spread to Hungarian family homes forty years ago.”
The publication was undertaken and performed by the Singer and Wolfner Literary Institute Rt., Which also has a long tradition, in Budapest between 1936 and 1942. The full series, published in just 6 years, consisted of 24 volumes, each with 255 volumes, typically two columns, for lexicons. There was also a version where two volumes of each volume appeared together, that is, a series that seemed to be 12 volumes at first. The total volume of the truly huge work is about 6,200 printed pages. This makes it one of the greatest Hungarian books of the time between the two world wars.
The lexicon series was published illustrated with tables, sheet music samples, maps, black and white and color text images, and full-page images (drawings, photographs, illustrations).
The 18x25 cm volumes appeared with a simple black cover with the title “UJ IDŐK LEXIKONA” in gilded letters. Usually the cover was joined by a black spine with gilded mesh decoration, serial and volume title, but there was also a rarer version of the spine: here the gilded serial and volume title was in a red box at the top and bottom on a dark blue background.
Occurrence today
- The series does not have a facsimile edition. It is relatively common in antique shops, yet it was searched at auctions.
- It is available in free-to-electronic form on the Arcanum.hu website.
