The Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies

The Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw), previously known as The Vienna Institute for Comparative Economic Studies, is a non-partisan, non-profit think tank/economics research institute focused on Central and Eastern Europe, based in Vienna, Austria. It was founded in 1972 and is currently led by Mario Holzner.[1] The institute conducts research, provides policy recommendations, and publishes books/articles on a wide range of topics related to international economics[2]

According to the 2020 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report (Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program, University of Pennsylvania), wiiw retained number 3 in category 'Top International Economics Think Tanks',[3][4] was ranked number 20 in 'Top Domestic Economic Policy Think Tanks', number 77 in category 'Top Think Tanks in Western Europe', and ranked 128 in category 'Top International Development Policy Think Tanks'.[5]

History

The institute, originally founded as the department of international comparative economics at the Austrian Institute of Economic Research (WIFO) in 1968, demerged in 1973 after its foundation on November 20, 1972.[6] In its first years under leadership of Kazimierz Łaski and Friedrich Levcik, it was mainly oriented on the analysis of developments in the states of the CMEA (COMECON). With the events of the Peaceful Revolution of 1989, the institute focused its research areas on the analysis and forecasting of economic trends in the reform countries of Central and Eastern Europe, and China.[6]
