Taungdwin Shin Nyein Me

Taungdwin Shin Nyein Me (Burmese: တောင်တွင်းရှင်ငြိမ်းမယ်) was a Burmese poet during the Restored Toungoo dynasty, best known for introducing a kind of Burmese folk song called ainggyin.[1]

Shin Nyein Me was one of the few artists of Nyaungyan period. Her ainggyins are the historical reflection of the late Nyaungyan period.[2] She composed the rare kind of poems— folksongs— found in the poetess.

Biography

The name of Taungdwin Shin Nyein Me had disappeared from the Burmese history[3] until San Tun discovered her existence.[4][5] Once he went to Bhamo Monastery, he got a set of parabaik named "Shay E Haung Su Mainma Hso" (ရှေးအဲဟောင်းစုမိန်းမဆို). There he found the 12 famous ainggyins together with their poet's name — Taungdwin Shin Nyein Me.[4][6]

Birth place

The Burmese literature world recognizes the birthplace of Taungdwin Shin Nyein Me was Taungdwingyi[7] for the following reasons.

  • The name of Taungdwin Shin Nyein Me was exactly stated on the parabaik, the discovery of San Tun. The word "Taungdwin" refers to Taungdwingyi.
  • In one of her ainggyins, she used the word "Shwedwin Thu" which also refers to Taungdwingyi.

Living place

It is assumed that Taungdwin Shin Nyein Me might have lived at Inwa during the reign of Mahadhammaraza Dipadi. There are two ainggyins she composed about the affairs of the country and military of Ava during Mahadhammaraza Dipadi.

Works

Many ainggyins Shin Nyein Me wrote are prescribed to the 8th to 11th graders studying the Burmese literature and poetry.

Her ainggyins are called "Yarpyae Ainggyin" (Centenary ainggyin) since the poems were written circa 1100 Burma era (AD 1738).[8] Her works include:

  • Sit Hmar Tamu (စစ်မှာတမူ)[1]
  • Shwe Phee Oo Ko Khue Le Par (ရွှေဖီဦးကိုခူးလှည့်ပါ)[9]
  • Pan Ya Par Lo (ပန်ရပါလို)[10]
  • Payphoo Lwar (ပေဖူးလွှာ)[11]
