Early years
Susana grew up in the Amsterdam suburb of Aalsmeer[1] and took classical singing lessons in her youth. She attended the De Brug primary school. [2] She also sang in a rock band named '010? for a while.[2]
Career
At the age of 19, she was presented by a neighbor to producers Raz Nitzan and Adrian Broekhuyse.[2] A few months later she was in the studio to get the vocals for Ernesto vs. Bastian's song "Dark Side of the Moon", which was released in 2005.[2] As a result, she turned exclusively to trance music.
Her second single was "Shivers", a collaboration with Armin van Buuren, which was also very successful. She has also accompanied Armin van Buuren several times on his Armin-Only tours and has had live performances at his concerts.[2] In 2008, she decided to pursue a full-time career in the music business instead of a master's degree in her Latin American studies.
In 2009, she recorded the hit "Nothing at All" with Rex Mundi.[2]
Two years later, in May 2010, her debut album Closer was released by the music label Armada Music. Susana has worked with numerous trance artists such as Dash Berlin, Mike Shiver, Josh Gabriel and Stoneface & Terminal for the songs on the album. Following the release, she again performed in an Armin Only tour with Armin van Burren and performed four songs including one from her own album, Desiderium 207.[2]
Shortly afterwards, she was signed by the label. She was the first trance vocalist to be signed by Armada.[2]
Later in 2010, she released "Closer - The Remixes".[2][3]
In 2012, she released her second album "Brave". This album included collaborations with Max Graham, Rex Mundi and Daniel Kandi.[2][4][5][6][7]
In 2013, the first collaboration Without You took place with the trance duo Aly & Fila, which appeared on Aly & Fila's album Quiet Storm. On the 11th September 2015 she performed together with Aly & Fila in front of the pyramids of Giza with her song Without You.[8]
In 2016, another composition with Aly & Fila took place through the track Unbreakable on FSOE Recordings, in which Susana sings in Spanish.[9]
In 2019, she performed with the Grammy-winners Metropole Orchestra at the Tomorrowland Festival.[1][10]
On November 9, 2019, she did a retrospective concert in her hometown of Aalsmeer in celebration of the 15th anniversary of her career.[1] [11]
Awards
She won the annual Trance Podium Award for "Best Vocalist" five years in a row from 2014 to 2018.[1]
In 2016, her track "Unbreakable" with Aly & Fila was voted Tune of the Year 2016 in Armin van Buuren's radio program A State of Trance.[12]
In 2021, her track with Armin Van Buuren, "Shivers" was voted as the #1 song in the 20-year history of A State of Trance as a part of episode 1000.[13] [14] [15] She appeared in Armin van Buuren's studio for the presentation at the end of the episode and was given a commemorative plaque showing her performing the song at the Tomorrowland Festival. Susana had ten songs in total in the ASOT1000 list of the top 1000 songs.
