Sub-caliber round
A sub-caliber round is a round the diameter of which is significantly smaller than the barrel diameter. An expendable sabot is used to increase the diameter to the full barrel width of the firing gun.
Sub-caliber rounds include flechettes, saboted light armor penetrators, and kinetic energy penetrator tank shells.
