Tracing its origins to 1832, Stites & Harbison is one of the oldest law practices in the nation. One of the firm's first partners was James Speed, who later served as U.S. Attorney General for President Abraham Lincoln.

The firm created its Atlanta office in May 1999, by merging with Varner, Stephens, Humphries & White. And, effective January 1, 2000, Stites & Harbison merged with the intellectual property practice of Wheat, Smith & Beres, PLC. On January 1, 2001, Stites & Harbison combined with the Nashville firm of Farris, Warfield & Kanaday. On January 1, 2004, the firm merged with the Alexandria boutique intellectual property firm of Larson & Taylor.[2]
