Sindisiwe van Zyl (born 3 April 1976) is a South African physician, Radio DJ and researcher known for using social media to share HIV-related, mental health and other medical information.[1][2][3][4]

Early life and education

Van Zyl was born in Harare, Zimbabwe.[5] She attended the University of Pretoria where she obtained a BSc in human physiology and psychology, and a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree.[6] Dr Sindisiwe Van Zyl interned at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.[7] In 2004, she married Marinus van Zyl.[8]

Career

She uses Twitter, mainly, to inform and engage about HIV particularly Prevention of mother to child transmission. She shares about her personal journey with depression and physician burnout[9][10] Dr. van Zyl chronicles how she lost 41 kg while on a Banting diet.[11] She is a natural short sleeper requiring about 4 hours of sleep per night while functioning normally.[12] Her scientific research has included guidelines to support HIV-affected individuals and couples to achieve pregnancy safely[13] and COVID-19 and HIV co-infection.[14]
