Shpock

Shpock is an online marketplace that uses a mobile and browser-based platform[1] for private buying and selling of things in the area. Shpock is operated by finderly GmbH and employs more than 185 people.[2] Finderly GmbH belongs to the Norwegian media group Schibsted.[3][4]

In 2016, Shpock was one of the ten most popular apps in Germany in the App Store and in Google Play.[5] In Austria, the marketplace app was one of the ten most loaded free iPhone apps in 2017.[6]

History

Shpock is a portmanteau meaning "Shop in your pocket"[7] and was first available for download free of charge in September 2012 for iOS and Android devices.[8][9] The app was downloaded more than a million times within the first year.[10][11] The app was developed by the Austrian start-up Finderly. The first financing was provided from own funds and grants, later Business Angel.[12] The app has been downloaded more than 50 million times on iOS and Android devices (as of October 2018).[2]

In November 2018, a massive staff reduction was announced shortly after a change of management; allowing the previously loss-making company to become profitable.

Awards

In 2018, Shpock was a laureate at the award ceremony "Germany's best online portals 2018" in the "Market places private providers" category of the German Institute for Service Quality.[13] Google awards Shpock 2018 the title "Android Excellence App of 2018" in the Google Play Store and Apple selects Shpock as a "Best of 2017" app in the category "Sustainability".[14] At the Goldbach Youngstar Award, Shpock was named "Youngest Brand in the 1st Half of 2018".[15] In 2013, Shpock won the futurezone Award in the category Apps [16] and was awarded the Mingo special prize at the Content Award Vienna.[17] At the “Show your App Awards" received the Silver app in 2014.[18]
