Political controversies and party shifting

At December 2020, Trinamool Congress authorities appointed Prashant Kishor as IT incharge and adviser for 2021 Vidhan Sabha elections in West Bengal.[4] There after most of the Trinamool leaders especially Dutta was critisising against Kishor for controlling the party. Kishor's team (I-PAC) went to Dutta's house after that. But Dutta declined their advice and said that what he is doing, he thought that well before doing it.[5]

At 18th of December, 2020, after Suvendu Adhikari resigns his MLA seat, Dutta also resigns from TMC but remained his MLA seat. Later at 20th of December, Union Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah's rally at Medinipur, Adhikari joined in Bharatiya Janata Party along with 9 MLAs including Dutta. Although, Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool rejected that incident.
