Sarkar (surname)
Sarkar (landlord/revenue-collector) is an Bangladeshi, Indian and Nepali surname, mostly found in Eastern India and Southern Nepal. In Nepal, the surname "Sarkar" belongs to the Hindu Chhetri community, whereas in India, this surname belongs to the Hindu Bengali brahmin and Kashitriya community. It was a more of a title rather than a surname received by families regardless of religion during British Period, which was later adopted as a surname. The title is based on Persian word sarkar meaning chief, superintendent, lord.
