Plot
Krishnan and Lakshmi have four sons and run Krishna Stores, a grocery store in a town named Ambalathara. Their world crumbles when Lakshmi's brother Shankaran forces Krishnan into financial difficulty, and Krishnan commits suicide. Balan (Balakrishnan), the eldest son of Krishnan marries Devi, a 21 year old youth, to look after his brothers and his ailed mother, Hari, Shivan and Kannan as if they were her own kids. Devi is often criticized by her relatives for not having children, but her brothers-in-law do not let it affect her.
Shankaran pressures Lakshmi to an arranged marriage between his daughter Anju and her son Hari. However, Hari is opposed as he's in love with college friend Aparna. Devi asks Balan to convince Appu to leave Hari, but he refuses. Devi secretly visits Appu's father Thampi, who gets offended and beats her; this transgression causes Hari to accept the marriage proposal. Thampi decides to kill Hari but his plan falls apart. Appu creates a scene in the marriage hall and the wedding is cancelled due to Hari's feelings and Anju's suspicions of an affair, leaving the families strained.
To repair the family reputation, Devi decides that Shiva should marry Anju. Eventually, Hari marries Appu and Shiva marries Anju, but Devi is criticized by Anju's mother, Lakshmi and Anju for what is seen as a poor match. The couple do come to love each other, though they have difficulty expressing it. Meanwhile, Appu and Hari fight over money until Appu adjusts to the lifestyle at Santhwanam.
Thampi sees Kannan escorting Appu's younger sister Amritha. Suspecting that they are lovers, Thampi assaults him. Kannan tells his brothers about this, who confront Thampi and have a physical altercation. Aparna worries about her father. Enraged, Thampi stops sending goods to Krishna Stores as Thampi have blocked the goods to the store via third-party. As a result there occurs a rapid shortage of goods at the shop. When enquired by Balan it is found out that it is indeed Thampi who did this dastardly deed and in order to get the full load should pay the full amount of approximately ₹5,00,000. Balan decides to mortgage the house so as to get the money in such a short span of time. Anju on hearing this decides to give her dowry gold to Shiva who refuses it by saying he do not need any of her belongings. Dejected. she brings this to Balan and forces him to mortgage it. Anju's mother and Jayanthi creates a ruckus upon knowing this. Shivan who is further humiliated by the duo reaches his maximum point of control and brings the gold and throws it on them.
