Ruff Kid

Masautso Nkhoma (born March 17, 1986) better known by his stage name Ruff Kid is a Zambian hip hop and Christian hip hop recording artist[4] and 2012 best international act winner at the Beffta Awards.[5] He debuted in 2000 with his single Wekatemwikwa. Ruff Kid is also the chief executive officer of his own label imprint, Kang'ono Records. He claims that the name Ruff Kid depicts his background.[6]

Early life

Masautso Nkhoma was Born in 1986 Lusaka and raised on the Cooperbelt. He become a rapper at a very young age as a means to escape poverty. His love for rap music was leveraged by people like Tu-pac Shakur.[7]

Music career

2000–2007: Early years

Ruff Kid's career started in 2000 when he released his first single "Wekatemwikwa". The song was an immediate success earning him the number 1 spot on the African international music charts on Channel O, on the Urban Massive show. Dream records released his first album "All 4 U" which was distributed by Zambia Angola Malawi Music Organisation (ZAMMO). His second studio album Matured was later released under Joe Chibungu. The album was successful compared to the last one, as he toured South Africa and also performed along side big African names like Kabelo, Oliver Mutukuzi, Yvone Chakachaka, Jozi, Zola, etc.... In 2006 his third album Most Wanted was released. The album had hits like the infamous "Bwete", "Mwechilibwe", and the "most controversial "chikalalila" which was produced by Raydo. The aforementioned record caused a lot of controversy in neighbouring countries because he name dropped a number of them. In 2007 Ruff kid won multiple awards namely the Born and Bred Award for Best Hip-hop video, CBC Music video Award, Radio Awards.[8]

2008–2012: The Kopala vs Lsk Beef

In 2008 there were rumours that rapper, Ruff kid has been adopted by was MC Wabwino, but people wondered triggered the fatherhood. In 2009 ruff kid was part of the Zambian Music revival which saw what became as known as the Kopala vs LSK beef. The revelry was a platform for over looked talents from other parts of the country to showcase their talent. In 2012 Ruff kid released fourth studio album "Point Blank".[9]

2013–present

In 2014 Ruff Kid launched a controversial album The Naked Truth.[3] The album received a lot of criticism over the cover photo.[2] At the launch of his album he made dramatic entrance when he came out of a casket received a lot of mixed reactions from his fans but however he was defended by Petersen Zagaze saying that "A primitive mind is no place to get advice...." he went on say "Everyday you watch movies with people in coffins, some even acting as Satanists, presidents, bishops, killers, sex workers, pilots, ghosts etc and you don’t complain, call [them] names or conclude, You see Ruff Kid do a coffin stunt stage entrance you talk shallowmind talk. Why? Is it because it wasn’t Ukwa in a Nigerian movie or Nicolas Cage in the coffin?".[10] After the successful launch of The Naked Truth, said: “I feel amazed by how some people can be shallow-minded and go to the extent of saying things such as Illuminati."[10]

He signed with Effycom Productions in the UK in 2018.[11]
