History
The company was established to provide insurance services in Liverpool in 1845.[1] It was initially based at a head office Queen Avenue in Liverpool[2] but then moved to a new head office in New John Street in 1903.[3]
Royal Insurance expanded its operations substantially by acquiring the Liverpool & London Globe Insurance, another major provincial insurance business, in 1919.[4] The enlarged company established its new head office at Liverpool & London's former head office at 1 Cornhill in London at that time.[5] It opened a new operational headquarters, known as The Capital, in Old Hall Street in Liverpool in July 1976[6] although the head office remained at 1 Cornhill in London.[7] The head office in London was completely refurbished in 1979.[5]
The company merged with Sun Alliance to form the Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Group in 1996.[8]
