The school is part of Loudoun County Public Schools and is located on 19019 Upper Belmont Place in Leesburg, Virginia. Riverside High School serves Lansdowne, Belmont Country Club, One Loudoun, Ashbrook Commons, and University Center.

History

Riverside opened in 2015, with its student body coming from Belmont Ridge Middle School, Stone Bridge High School, Broad Run High School, and Tuscarora High School. The school's capacity is at around 1,800 students.

During the first year, there were nearly 854 students from 9th through 11th grade; seniors stayed at Stone Bridge, Broad Run, or Tuscarora. The following year, the number of students increased to 1,317 students due to the attendance of the freshman class of 2020.

Schedule information

Riverside High School is open from 9:15 am until 4:03 pm on all school days. Loudoun County schools are open later than neighboring jurisdictions such as Fairfax County and Prince William County where most schools open considerably earlier.[2][3]

Riverside operates on an 8 period block schedule alternating each day, which are designated as A and B days. Periods 1–4 are on A days (all class periods in order); and periods 5–8 are on B days. Though there are eight periods, all students have a mandatory study hall period which is on one of these days (A/B) and periods. Some students, usually seniors or juniors (who must take a marketing co-op class) may obtain exemptions to leave school early.

Accreditation

Riverside High School is fully accredited based on its performance on the Standards of Learning tests in Virginia since its opening in 2015.

Curriculum

Riverside High School offers a comprehensive curriculum to all of its students. Most students take a standard curriculum, but the school is also a member of the Advanced Placement program, ESL courses for those who are learning English as their second language, and special education courses for students with learning disabilities. Some students also elect to take classes at the Loudoun Academy of Science for math and science courses or the C.S. Monroe Technology Center for vocational courses.

RVHS offers a wide variety of elective courses in a wide variety of areas, including Marketing, Technology, Art, Music, and Advanced Physical Education (for 11th and 12th graders only).

Fine arts

Riverside is a blue ribbon school after obtaining all superiors at the 2017 District Assessments.

Drama

Riverside's drama department puts on annual shows. In the 2016–17 school year, Alice in Wonderland, Full Moon, and Willy Wonka were performed.

Band

Riverside's band program includes a marching band, a jazz ensemble, and a concert band. Riverside band obtained a superior rating at the 2017 District Assessment. The Riverside Marching Rams won the Group 1A Virginia State Championship on October 21, 2017 at the USBands Virginia State Championship in Virginia Beach, VA. The Riverside Marching Rams won the Group 2A Virginia State Championship and placed second overall on October 20, 2018 at the USBands Mid-Atlantic Championship in Towson, MD.[4]

Orchestra

Riverside's orchestra program includes an intermediate and advanced orchestra. Riverside orchestra obtained a superior rating at the 2017 District Assessment.

Chorus

The choir program is made up of the advanced vocal ensemble, men’s choir, and women's choir. Riverside choir obtained a superior rating at the 2017 District Assessment.

Extracurricular activities

Riverside's DECA program won first place at the 2016 DECA International Career Development Conference (School-Based Enterprise Retail Operations).

Athletics

The mascot is a ram and the sports teams play in the 5 A Potomac District. The Rams' athletic teams have won team state and regional championships in their short history.
