On 21 March 2016, he has been elected to the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Indian Parliament along with Ranee Narah also from the Indian National Congress. Congress got support from AIUDF for the biennial Rajya Sabha election held on that day .Out of 114 MLAs, 85 (67 of INC, 16 of AIUDF, 1 Independent, 1 BJP voted for the Congress candidate. AGP, BJP, BPF boycotted the election even when it had earlier committed to support Mahabir Jain who had filed nomination paper as Independent. [1]
Controversy
On 21 September 2020, Ripun Bora along with seven other members were suspended from the Rajya Sabha for their unruly behaviour in the house by tearing documents, breaking mics and heckling the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. Their actions were condemned by several leaders. [2] [3]
