René Carmans

René Carmans (16 March 1945 – 16 July 2020) was a Belgian footballer, who played as a goalkeeper.[1] He was named ‘Black Panther’ because he was always wearing black clothes.[2]

Carmans played for K.F.C. Diest from 1962 until 1975. He was the first keeper from 1964 until the mid 1970s. The trainer of the national team Raymond Goethals had an eye on him, but he chose Jean Marie Pfaff to be the goalkeeper for the national team. This was not appreciated by the fans of K.F.C. Diest, and they even wrote a letter to the trainer.[2]

Carmans died in July 2020 of heart disease, aged 75.[2]
