Ralf Steudel

Ralf Steudel (* 25 March 1937 in Dresden) is a German chemist and university professor who is known for his research in the area of sulfur chemistry as well as for his textbook Chemistry of the Non-Metals which appeared in several languages and many editions. Steudel was born to a family of entrepreneurs in the Saxonian town of Kamenz. In 1954 he moved to Berlin (West), started his university studies of chemistry in 1957 at the Free University Berlin where he graduated in 1963. In 1965 he received his PhD in chemistry at the Technical University Berlin (TUB)[1] where he subsequently made his habilitation work resulting in the venia legendi for inorganic chemistry in 1969.[2] In the same year he was appointed professor of inorganic chemistry at TUB, a position he held till his retirement in 2003. In 1973/74 he spent 1 year as a visiting professor at the Spectroscopy Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge (Mass.). Scientific Work Steudel published more than 300 research papers in journals and books as well as monographs and textbooks, partly translated from English. His research papers have been cited more than 7500 times resulting in an h-index of 40. His most frequently cited contributions are:

  • Properties of Sulfur-Sulfur Bonds, Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 1975, 14, 655–654.
  • Homocyclic Sulfur Molecules, Topics in Current Chemistry 1982, 102, 149–176.
  • Mechanism for the Formation of Elemental Sulfur from Aqueous Sulfide in Chemical and Microbiological Desulfurization Processes, Ind. Eng. Chem. Res. 1996, 35, 1417–1423.
  • The Chemistry of Organic Polysulfanes R2Sn (n > 2), Chem. Rev. 2002, 102, 3905–3946.
  • (ed.), Elemental Sulfur and Sulfur-Rich Compounds, Topics in Current Chemistry 2003, 230, 1–134.

In addition, Steudel investigated the chemistry of selenium compounds as well as vulcanization-related zinc complexes. Steudel cooperated with more than 40 international research groups resulting in joint publications with physicist, theoreticians, microbiologists, astronomers, mineralogists etc. He also served as chairman of the 6th International Symposium on Inorganic Rings Systems (IRIS VI) and as consultant to chemical companies.
