Roane's brigade, together with Cooper's Indian brigade (at Evansville) constituted a Reserve Division for the Trans-Mississippi Army. However, during field operations Hindman attached Roane and the dismounted Texas cavalrymen, in whom he held little confidence, to Frost's division.
