History
The Council of Paris decided to pay homage to Harvey Milk in 2019.[1] The square was inaugurated by French officials on June 19th, with Stuart Milk.[2]
The same day, Paris honoured also Gilbert Baker, friend of Harvey Milk, by an official plaque in his memory on the Place des Émeutes-de-Stonewall.[3]
Features
The square is at only 100m away from the main entrance of the Paris City Hall, denomination being a tribute of the elected officials of the Council of Paris to their San Franciscan assassinated colleague.[4] From the place Harvey Milk towards the Hôtel de Ville, Notre-Dame-de-Paris is seen in perspective.
One year before the decision of the City of Paris to name the square after Harvey Milk, rainbow zebra crossings were tagged with homophobic graffiti.[5] In response, rainbow crossings are now permanent.[6] Naming precisely this crossroad after Harvey Milk was praised by anti-homophobia organizations.[7][8]
The square is now one of the main entrances of famous department store Bazar de l'Hôtel de Ville.
