Playing career
Severstal Cherepovets
A native of Cherepovets, Buchnevich started playing ice hockey at his hometown team Severstal Cherepovets. He made his debut for the team in the 2012–13 season. He split the 2015–16 season between KHL outfits Cherepovets and SKA St. Petersburg.[1]
New York Rangers
On 13 May 2016, Buchnevich followed his NHL ambitions and signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL).[2] Buchnevich made the Rangers' lineup for the 2016–17 season. He made his NHL debut on 13 October 2016 in a 5-3 win over the New York Islanders, and scored his first NHL goal in a 5–2 victory against the Boston Bruins on 5 November 2016.[3][4]
Buchnevich missed significant time during his rookie season with back spasms, including a stretch of nearly two months from November 2016 to January 2017. After returning to the lineup, Buchnevich was assigned to the Hartford Wolf Pack for a four-game conditioning stint, before finally returning to the Rangers on 13 January in a 4–2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
On 26 July 2019, the Rangers re-signed Buchnevich to a two-year, $6.5 million contract extension.[5]
