P. Amudha

P. Amudha is an Indian civil servant, a 1994 batch IAS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre who is currently appointed as Joint Secretary in Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). She is currently working as a professor of Public Administration at the prestigious Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand.[1][2] She was the executive director of the Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women under Tamil Nadu Government and has worked as a program officer with the United Nations Children’s Fund for Water and Sanitation. She has worked in 15 different departments under Government of Tamil Nadu.[3] She is known for her penchant for being on the field and taking bold decisions.[4]

Background

P. Amudha was born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. She completed her schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya in Madurai. She completed her undergraduation in Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai. She got inspiration from her grandmother and grandfather, who is a freedom fighter. Her husband is also a civil servant who is currently serving as Principal Secretary to the Government of Tamil Nadu under the Handlooms, Handicrafts, Textiles and Khadi Department.

P. Amudha started her career as an IAS officer from 4 September 1994 in Tamil Nadu cadre.[5] Initially, she was appointed as collector of Dharmapuri district in Tamil Nadu. She was additional chief electoral officer in the Public (Elections) Department in the Tamil Nadu Government. Prior to this position, she served in the Health and Family Welfare Department of the Tamil Nadu Government as project director and member-secretary of the Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society. She was the executive director for the Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women in the Tamil Nadu Government, and has worked as program officer with the United Nations Children's Fund for Water and Sanitation. For many years, she was also the district collector with the Land Revenue Management and District Administration.[6][7]

Her colleagues recalled that in one of her assignments during the latter half of the 1990s, as Sub-Collector in Gobichettipalayam, Erode, she would venture deep into the Sathyamangalam forests to meet locals. The local people began to trust the State during her posting there. She is known for her works in empowering women in Dharmapuri. She took efforts to improve the literacy rate among women with the active participation of self-help groups.

She also cracked down on illegal sand mining in Chengalpattu.

2015 Chennai floods

During the historic 2015 Chennai floods P. Amudha was deployed as Special Officer for monsoon relief as she is known as an extremely effective field officer. She ordered the demolition of numerous concrete buildings that were encroaching on waterbodies and flood carriers.

Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA)

On 11 March 2019, P. Amudha was appointed as professor of Public Administration at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA).[8]

Sports

P. Amudha is a kabaddi player. She was a member of the kabbadi team that won the national championship thrice. She is also trained in karate.[9]
