Nicky Hayes

Nicky Hayes is a writer of psychology textbooks and an author of published articles on psychological topics which have been widely quoted.[1] She is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a Chartered Psychologist.[2] Her first book "A First Course in Psychology" was published in 1984,[3] and was followed over the years by further editions and a number of other texts and papers.[1]

Early life

Nicola Jane Hayes was born in 1953 near Maidenhead in Berkshire, England. She lived in the area until 1964, when she moved to the Wirral. She attended Wallasey High School until 1971, and studied psychology at Leeds University from 1972 until 1975. She then worked as a Residential Social Worker with Leeds City Council from 1976 to 1979, when she left to take a PGCE in Further and Higher Education at Holly Bank, Huddersfield. She then undertook an M.Ed. at Leeds University from 1981 to 1983.

Career

She worked as a part-time teacher of psychology in various Further and Higher Education colleges in West Yorkshire, and at Leeds Polytechnic from 1980 to 1981, before taking a full-time post at Huddersfield Technical College in 1982, teaching 'O' and 'A' Level psychology. In 1985 she left Huddersfield Technical College to teach degree-level psychology at Trinity and All Saints College in Leeds, and later at Huddersfield and Leeds Polytechnics. During these years she was influential in establishing psychology at school level in the United Kingdom, working with the Association for the Teaching of Psychology and later the British Psychological Society, eventually receiving the BPS Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Teaching of Psychology.[4] In 1992 she was awarded a PhD from the Council for National Academic Awards (the CNAA), on the thesis "Social Identity, Social Representations and Organisational Culture". She then undertook consultancy work with various organisations, with honorary positions at Huddersfield University, and later at the University of Surrey. In 2000 she accepted a full-time post in Bradford University, but left in 2003 for family reasons to live in the Highlands of Scotland. There, from 2005 to 2012 she was an active partner in the Harbour Lights Cafe[5] in Gairloch, Wester-Ross. She became Chair of the British Psychological Society Committee on Test Standards in 2019.[6]

Research

During her career, Nicky Hayes has undertaken research into the social dynamics of organisations and organisational culture, psychology teaching, growth in SMEs,[7] and also into the psychological underpinnings of interactive science exhibits.[8] She has presented at numerous conferences, including the World Congress of Psychology, and was keynote speaker at the International Conference on Teaching Psychology held in St Petersburg in 2002.

Awards

1985 Honorary Life Member of the Association for the Teaching of Psychology.

1997 British Psychological Society's Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Teaching of Psychology.[4]
