Museon Arlaten

Museon Arlaten ("Arles Museum" in Provençal dialect of Occitan) is a museum dedicated to the ethnography of Provence. It is located in Arles, at 29, rue de la République, and it is hosted in the 15th century Hôtel particulier Laval-Castellane,[1] now a monument historique. The museum has been closed for repair works since October 25, 2009. Its reopening, planned for 2015, has been postponed to winter 2020/21.[2]

History

The museum was founded by Frédéric Mistral[1] and opened in 1899. With the help of Jules Charles-Roux and Jeanne de Flandreysy, he established a gallery with statues from the Antiquity found on the grounds of the museum.[3]

Collections

The museum has an important collection of Provençal folk art, displaying furniture, costumes, ceramics, tools and farming implements.
