In 1945, Henry Daley, who worked for the Beasley Farms in Pomona, Ca. was working in the walnut orchard. He accidentally hit one of the trees and the nuts came pouring down. He tried using the bucket on the tractor to shake the tree, with little success, so he went back to the barn and created a hook that he attached to the front of the bucket. He went back to the orchard and placed the hook over a limb, then put the tractor in reverse. as the tires spun, the limb shook and the walnuts fell off. The farm used this method of removing the walnuts, till they disposed of the farm. It wasn't till 1964, that the shaker was patented.
