Md. Salleh Yaapar
Md. Salleh Yaapar (born December 20, 1946) is a Malaysian scholar of comparative literature[1] and a professor of the School of Humanities at the University Sains Malaysia.[2] He is the head of the Institute of Language and Literature of Malaysia and the holder of the European Chair of the Malay studies at Leiden University in Leiden, Netherlands. A recipient of the honorary title of Dato' Seri by the state, he is also a Distinguished fellow of the International Institute of Islamic Civilization and Malay World.[3]
Biography
Md. Salleh was born on December 20, 1946 in a remote village in Permatang Rawa, Kepala Batas located northwest of Peninsular Malaysia. He is the only son of Jaafar bin Shafie and Rahmah binti Ahmad. His father never went to school, only had a small grocery store in the village and with his mother, he was also a rice grower. Salleh’s mother was the leader of a traditional Muslim singing group who entertained the villagers during the maulud, the birthday celebration of the prophet Muhammad. She was also known as 'teller of stories' in the village tradition. She would read for gatherings in the villages, as well as to her son at home, quotes from tale of the life of Muhammad, the tale of Amir Hamzah and tell him about myths and legends of rich and vast treasures in traditional oral language. This background had formed his heart and mind.[4]
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Universiti Sains Malaysia and a master of arts degree from the University of the Philippines. He received his PhD from Temple University, Philadelphia.[5] Salleh has taught at a number of academic institutions at home and abroad including University Sains Malaysia and Leiden University in Leiden, Netherlands. He has served as the head of the Institute of Language and Literature of Malaysia, the government body in charge of coordinating the use of the Malay language and the Malay language literature in Malaysia.[2]
