Mahant Raja Sarveshwar Das

Mahant Raja Sarveshwar Das was the Ruler of the Former Princely State of Nandgaon State in the Present-day Rajnandgaon District of Chhattisgarh Pradesh, India. He was a Bairagi Ruler.[1][2] He was a Liberal and Progressive Ruler.

Early life

Raja Sarveshwar Das completed his primary education from Rajkumar College, Raipur then he went to London for higher education. He succeeded to throne of Nandgaon State on 1927 after death of Mahant Raja Rajendra Das in 1927. Mahant Raja Balram Das had no childern. After dealth of Mahant Raja Balram Das, queen Suryamukhi adopted Rajendra Das as her son and next ruler of Nandgaon but he died in short period of time. Shyamcharan father of Sarveshwar Das was selected as next ruler of Nandgaon by family members and disciples. But he was so old that he was not able to rule state. Sarveshwar Das considered ruler of Nandgaon state.[3]

Education

In 1648, the urgent need of a modern well-equipped museum was felt in Raipur city, situated in the middle of Chhattisgarh Department and the erstwhile indigenous states. The need to establish a library with a fully equipped museum on a scientific basis was also useful for both scholars and students, and where the accumulated knowledge of the ages emerged. Because such an institution not only has educational importance but it also contributes significantly to the social and cultural development of the city and nearby areas.

The queen of Nandgaon, Rani Jyoti Devi, Donated Rs. 50 thousand to Build a library Attached to the Museum With the Intention of keeping the memory of her late husband Mahant Sarveshwar Das intact. Mahant Sarveshwar Das Library has been established with this donation. A separate building of the library has not been constructed and it is presently established in Srotrishala. Every year, grants are received from the government for the operation of the museum.

With the Establishment of Mahant Sarveshwar Das Library, a great need of the city of Raipur has been fulfilled. This library has become very popular. It has about 6000 texts in Hindi, English, Sanskrit and other Indian languages. This Collection is Augmented by Purchasing New books every year. Apart From this, around forty Magazines and Periodicals are called in Hindi, English, Marathi, Gujarati, and Bangla languages. An average of 125 people benefit every day by selling newspapers. There is a special arrangement For those doing research work and those who distribute books in the library, from which more than 3000 people take Advantage every year.

Sports

Mahant Sarveshwar Das was interested in Hockey, He was also a Good Player of Hockey , so an all India Hockey Tournament is Held in Rajnandgaon in his Name and Rajnandgaon is on the map of International Hockey.

Personal life

He got married with Jayanti Devi princess of Mayurbhanj State in 1932. Raja Sarveshwar Das died on 10 May 1940.[4]
