In February 2016 it was awarded three stars, at the same time as the Danish restaurant Geranium, the first Nordic restaurants given three stars. Maaemo focuses on local food and only uses organic, biodynamic, or wild produce.
In June 2016, Maaemo was voted 61st best restaurant in the world at The World's 50 Best Restaurants awards. [2] In 2018, it was placed 35th.[3] In December 2019, the restaurant closed to move to another location. This resulted in the loss of all of its three Michelin stars in February 2020.
