Background
After the release of previous studio effort Turn Out the Lights (2017), Julien Baker began performing with the group Boygenius alongside Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus. The group released a self-titled EP in October 2018. Boygenius also features on the Hayley Williams track "Roses/Lotus/Violet/Iris" which was released on March 19, 2020 and featured on Williams' debut solo album Petals for Armor. Additionally, Baker performed on tracks from Phoebe Bridgers' 2020 album Punisher.
On April 8, 2020, Baker unveiled non-album single "Mercy" which was first performed on a livestream on Instagram Live.[4] The livestream also served as an Isol-Aid fundraiser to support music workers who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.[5]
