Early life
Kim Anh grew up in Florida and is mixed-race. Her mother is from Vietnam and father is Sicilian-Mexican. She moved to New York City before relocating to Los Angeles in her early 20s to pursue work in music for film and television. While in New York City she became involved in the 90s club scene and was influenced by the New York-Chicago-Detroit trifecta of house music. She currently resides between Los Angeles and New York City.[1]
Booby Trap! 2008–2013
Kim Anh became a full time artist when she created her first club night in Los Angeles called Booby Trap! in 2008. Following the success of Booby Trap!, Kim Anh went on to become an international DJ, playing 1980s and 1990s classic house, new wave, and cosmic disco inspired gigs in Paris.[2]
Career
Kim Anh made her release debut in 2012 with a remix on Sam Sparro's platinum remix release of Happiness which reached number 1 in Belgium.[3]
Kim Anh served as the opening act for Uh Huh Her's Future Souls tour.
In 2015, Kim Anh released her first solo EP, Shadows. The title track co-produced by Sam Sparro, features her own original vocals and songwriting.[4][5] The EP includes remixes by Roy Davis Jr., Eli Escobar, and JT Almon.[6] Dummy Magazine positively reviewed the Eli Escobar remix, stating "What do we call this beautiful hybrid of pop vocals with chugging dance beats, that make mainstream sensibilities cool again?"
In 2016, Kim Anh's 'STARGASM' remix of Peaches' Light in Places was released on the Rub Remixed LP. Featured alongside Maya Jane Coles, Paula Temple, and Lauren Flax. Peaches only asked women to produce the remixes. Ahead of the release, Pitchfork quoted Peaches as saying, "I wanted to hear how my favorite producers would re-contextualize the songs on Rub."[7]
Kim Anh's second solo EP, Make Me Feel, was released in 2018 and featured remixes by Juan Maclean, Tim K, and Craig Williams.[8] That same year, Kim Anh was featured as a vocalist on Massimiliano Pagliara's LP Feel Live on German record label Live at Robert Johnson.[9]
In 2019, Kim Anh collaborated with Brazilian-Austrian artist Joyce Muniz to release an EP, Give Me The Taste, on DJ Hell’s label International Deejay Gigolo Records. DJ Mag described Kim Anh's vocals as "lucid and absorbing, and convey an assertion and power that pairs perfectly with the track’s immediacy and intimacy".[10] A remix EP was released by DJ Pierre's Afro Acid label in summer of 2019 featuring remixes by Oliver $, Stefan Braatz, Alinka, Hannah Holland and Lauren Flax.[11]
