Kilpyavr's interceptor regiment initially operated the Sukhoi Su-9 (Fishpot) in the 1960s and 1970s.[1] This aircraft was replaced in 1978 with the MiG-23M (Flogger-B).[1] Kilpyavr also operated the MiG-19, and upgraded to Su-27 aircraft in 1985.
Google Earth high-resolution satellite imagery dating to around March 2007 showed 37 interceptor aircraft on the tarmac.
