Khalil Joreige

Khalil Joreige (Arabic: خليل جريج‎) is a Lebanese film director, screenwriter and artist. He often collaborates with Joana Hadjithomas, his wife as filmmakers and artists producing works that create thematic links between photography, video, performance, installation, sculpture, and cinema.[1] They also teach and contribute to several publications.

Art

Furthermore, they have created several photo and video installations that are shown in art centers, museums and galleries in group shows as well as solo exhibitions such as Haus der Kunst (Munich), HOME (Manchester), IVAM (Valencia), Jeu de Paume (Paris), MIT List Visual Arts Center (Cambridge), MOMA (New York), Museum of Modern Art (Paris), Tate Modern (London), The Powerplant (Toronto), and Villa Arson (Nice).

Joreige and Hadjithomas have participated in the 9th Gwangju Biennale (2012),[2] and in other biennials such as Taipei, Venice, Istanbul, Lyon, Sharjah, Kochi, and the Paris Triennale. Their artwork is part of important private and public collections including British Museum (London), Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), Fond national d’art contemporain (France), MCA Chicago, Museum of Modern Art (Paris), Sharjah Art Foundation (UAE), Solomon R Guggenheim Museum (New York),[3] and Victoria & Albert Museum (London).

Joana Hadjithomas & Khalil Joreige were awarded the Abraaj Capital Art Prize 2012.[4] In 2012, Ashkal Alwan organized How Soon is Now: A Tribute to Dreamers a comprehensive exhibition of Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige at the Beirut Exhibition Center.[5]In 2017, they were awarded the Marcel Duchamp Prize for their installation Unconformities presented at the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris).[6][7]

They are represented by In Situ – fabienne leclerc[8] in Paris (France), and The Third Line[9] in Dubai (UAE).

Film

Hadjithomas and Joreige have directed numerous films that have been shown and awarded in the most prestigious international film festivals including ISMYRNA (2016); The Lebanese Rocket Society: The Strange Tale of The Lebanese Space Race (2012), which received multiple awards such as Best Documentary Award in Doha Tribeca Festival, Qatar; Khiam 2000-2007 (2008). A Perfect Day (2005) is one of their most acclaimed films, and earned them the Don Quixote Award and the FIPRESCI Prize at the Locarno International Film Festival. They also received acclaim for Around the Pink House, which was Lebanon's official Best Foreign Language Film submission at the 72nd Academy Awards, but did not manage to receive a nomination.[10] Several retrospectives of their films have been presented in renowned institutions such as Cinematek (Brussels), Flaherty Seminar (New York), and Institut Français and Mori Art Museum (Tokyo) among many others.[11]

In 2008 they directed Catherine Deneuve in a film that premiered in the official selection of Cannes Film festival Je veux voir (I want to see) which was awarded Best Singular Film by the French Critics Guild, and they also presented a documentary Khiam 2000-2007. Their films have been shown in the most prestigious festivals where they have gathered awards, and have been released theatrically in many countries.

Their latest feature film, Memory Box will be released in 2021.[12]

Publications and lectures

Hadjithomas and Joreige are authors of numerous publications and artists books such as Latent images, Rosascape (2010)[13] and Beirut, Urban Fictions, Mind the Gap, (1997). They both regularly present lecture-performances such as Aida Save Me and Latent Images. Together, they are often invited as university lecturers in Lebanon and Europe.[14]

Both artists are co-founders of the production company Abbout Productions[15] with Georges Schoucair, as well as executive members of Metropolis Art Cinema[16] and the Cinemathèque in Beirut.
