It was established in January, 2009 by the government of Karnataka with a campus spread over 55 acres of land.[1] The university offers various undergraduate and postgraduate law courses in subjects such as Constitutional Law, Intellectual Property Rights, Business and Trade Law Criminal Law and International Law.[1] Nearly 92 law colleges of Karnataka are affiliated to it. Its motto is "Indian Roots and Global Heights".[1]

The first vice chancellor of the university was J. S. Patil. Dr. P. Ishwara Bhat is the present vice chancellor.[2] It was recognized as a Four Star Institution in the category of Specialist University on the basis of comprehensive performance metrics set out in the Karnataka State Universities Rating in 2019
