John Carpenter (referee)

John Carpenter (1937 - ?) was an Irish international football referee.[1]

Career

He officiated six international matches and was FIFA referee in 1970-83. He refereed four matches in EURO qualifying 1972 (1), 1976 (1), 1980 (1), 1984 (1) and two matches in World Cup qualifying matches 1978 (1), 1982 (1).[2] He gave two red cards in EURO qualifying matches.[3]

In club football he refereed some matches in UEFA competitions such as Champions League (10), UEFA Cup (15) and Cup Winners Cup (11). One of them was 1982 UEFA Cup Final 1st leg, that played between IFK Göteborg-Hamburger SV (1:0). He also officiated 1978 Irish Cup final, played between Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers (1:0) which he appointed a controverial penalty kick.[4][5][6]

Personal life

After active refereeing career he was President of the Referee Committee of the Irish Football Association.
