James A. McCartney

James A. McCartney was an American politician who served as the 19th attorney general for the state of Illinois, from 1881 to 1885. He was born in Scotland on February 14th, 1835 and moved to Pennsylvania as an infant. He moved to Illinois as a young man and began to practice law. He then served as a captain in the Northern army during the civil war. He was elected to the post of Attorney General as a Republican in 1880, and began his term in 1881.[1]
