Jairamnagar

Jairamnagar is a town and a railway station approximately 14 km from Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. It is one of the towns of Masturi tehsil of the Bilaspur District and is located approximately 4.9  km from Masturi. Before 1939, the town was known as Paragaht.[1][2]

The station was named Jairamnagar after Rai Bahadur Jairam Valji Chauhan, a notable Kutchi railway contractor. It was named on the 1st of September, 1939 by Bengal Nagpur Railway authorities. This made Jairamnagar the only railway station in India to have been named after an individual who is a businessman. The station code is JMRG. [1][2] Rai Bahadur Jairam Valji Chauhan used to be the sole proprietor of Jairamnagar village land and also used to own mining sites of dolomite, manganese, and limestone.[3][4][5]

The town has a large pond, which was once a limestone quarry belonging to Rai Bahadur Jairam Valji. Locals of Jairamnagar use its water for their daily needs such as cooking, washing, and bathing. Beside the pond, there is a Shiva temple built-in 1922 by Jairam Valji Chauhan.

It is mostly known for its coal exports and its occupants are mostly coal workers and shopkeepers. The coal depots were converted from unused farms and most of the coal storage spaces were owned by the fourth generation of the Bandhe (बंधे) family. The settlement has some well-known schools, such as the St. Joseph Pignatelli College, Bhagat Singh Academy, and Sarswati Sishu Mandir Learning Center.

The town now has a population of more than 7,000 people.
