Originally from Mansfield, Victoria, he attended Haileybury College, Melbourne[1] and played for the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup. Hutchins was a promising junior swimmer and swam in the national swimming championships in 2009.[2] He was recruited by Gold Coast as one of the club's underage recruits prior to their entry to the AFL in 2011.[3] Hutchins made his debut in round 5, 2011 against Port Adelaide.[4] After nineteen matches with Gold Coast in four seasons, he was delisted at the conclusion of the 2014 season,[5] and he joined the Casey Scorpions in the VFL.[6] His second season with Casey saw him win the Gardner Medal as the club best and fairest player.[7]
