Hydro Flask

Hydro Flask is a brand of water bottle owned by Helen of Troy Limited. The brand became very popular during mid 2019 and early 2020, particularly among millennials, members of Generation Z, and members of the "VSCO girl" subculture. Its trendiness has been credited to rising environmental and health consciousness as well as the quality and appearance of the water bottle.[2][3][4]

History

Hydro Flask was founded in 2009 by Travis Rosbach and his then-girlfriend, Cindy Weber, due to his dissatisfaction with commercial water bottles.[3] It was formally known as Steel Technologies LLC.[5] The couple moved to Bend, Oregon to market their product and it enjoyed early success at local farmers markets, especially among the outdoor recreation community there.[3]

The brand grew further when it began to be sold in stores. Around this time, Weber and Rosbach broke up, causing them to both sell their shares in the company to an investor. In 2012, tech executive Scott Allan became president and chief executive of the company, expanding the company's market into Europe, launching new products, and making efforts to market the brand on social media.[3]

On February 29, 2016, Helen of Troy Limited announced that they had arranged to buy Hydro Flask.[5] They completed the purchase on March 21 for about $210 million.[6] Scott Allan retired on March 1, 2020 and his responsibilities were distributed to Helen of Troy divisional leadership. He said in an interview "the goals that I initially aspired to accomplish have largely been achieved."[7]

Products

The company is best known for its water bottles but also produces wine tumblers, tote bags, cooler bags, and a number of other products.[8]

The water bottles are metal, manufactured mostly in China, and make use of double-wall vacuum insulation in order to keep liquids cold or hot for a long time.[2][3]

As of October 2019, Hydro Flask offered customizable water bottles in 14 colors.[3] The company also offers different cap types and sizes and regularly releases limited edition bottle designs for enthusiasts.[2]
