Honours of Aung San Suu Kyi
Aung San Suu Kyi has received numerous honours and awards throughout her life for her peace and freedom activism in Myanmar. However, since the start of the Rohingya genocide in 2016, many of these honours have been revoked due to her perceived inaction to stop the crisis.[1]
Honorary citizen
- She was awarded honorary Canadian citizenship in 2007. Due to human rights concerns over the Rohingya both houses of the Parliament of Canada voted unanimously to revoke the honour; the House of Commons of Canada voted unanimously to revoke her honorary citizenship on 27 September 2018,[2] and the Senate of Canada did the same on 2 October 2018.[3] She is the first recipient of honorary Canadian citizenship to have the honour withdrawn.
