Greentea Peng

Aria Wells,[1] known professionally as Greentea Peng, is a neo-soul[2] and self-described 'psychedelic R'n'B'[3] singer and songwriter from south east London, UK. Her musical influences include Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Miss Dynamite and Lily Allen.[4][3] Her stage name is taken from her love of green tea, and the London slang word 'peng' - which means attractive or tasty.[1][4][5]

Along with her music, she is also known for her distinctive fashion style with full-body tattoos, many piercings and much jewellery.[6][7]

Musical style and career

Born in South London in the early 1990s, Wells moved to Hastings with her family aged 12. She stopped singing by the age of 15 due to personal reasons and took it up again in her early twenties.[8] She started recording music seriously after a period of six months spent living in Mexico.[7]

Her debut EP, Sensi, was released in October 2018.[9] Media figures noted the multiple genres incorporated within the record's sound, including R'n'B, hip hop and dub reggae.[7] In June 2019 she performed a live version of her track Downers for the popular YouTube channel[10] COLORS.[11] By October that year it had pulled in 2.5 million views.[3]

In October 2019 she was also part of a promotional campaign for the sportswear brand Adidas, featuring poster advertisements and commissioned remix collaborations between up and coming artists from around the world.[12]

In January 2020, Greentea Peng was featured in The Observer newspapers' 20 for 2020 list of rising stars in music, media and culture.[1] In June 2020 she featured on The Streets' single "I Wish You Loved You As Much As You Love Him", from the mixtape None Of Us Are Getting Out Of This Life Alive.[13] In January 2021 she placed fourth in the BBC's Sound of... 2021 list.[14]
