Greenfield High School (Wisconsin)

Greenfield High School is a public high school in Greenfield, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, located at 4800 S. 60th Street (the intersection of Layton Avenue and South 60th Street). Established in 1957, GHS represents one of the three school districts within the city of Greenfield (the other two being Whitnall and West Allis-West Milwaukee). It is a four-year public high school accredited by North Central Accrediting Association (NCA) and runs on a 49-minute, seven-period, two-semester schedule. The staff of 70+ teachers, three guidance counselors, three administrators, one school sociologist, one school psychologist, and 40+ support staff serve approximately 1,200 students.

History

Construction began on the original Greenfield High School on December 16, 1957, shortly after the City of Greenfield was incorporated. The 47-acre site on the corner of Layton Avenue and South 60th Street was purchased for $65,000. Though construction continued, it opened for the first day of school September 12, 1958 with an assembly in the unfinished cafeteria. The school was officially dedicated on June 14, 1959.[4]

In 2010, a new high school was built at a cost of $41 million. The school includes a school store, a remodeled cafeteria, and a fitness center. An academic wing was built to replace the wing from the original school. In addition, a new gymnasium was built to supplement the existing "Hawk Dome". The natatorium had its ribbon cutting on January 8, 2010. Athletic facilities include a track, tennis courts, and baseball, soccer, and football fields. The Greenfield Board of Education built a new district office on the premises of Greenfield High School, where board meetings are now held.

On June 21, 2011 a new baseball field was rededicated to Greenfield High School alumnus Bob Wieland, who was severely injured in Vietnam.

Sports

GHS is a member of the WIAA and the Woodland Conference for athletics, and offers 10 boys' sports and 9 girls' sports. GHS extra-curricular organizations include National Honor Society, DECA, and YESS, as well as about 10 other clubs, including the Environmental Club, R.C. Club, Rocket Club, Film Society, the Air Force JROTC Program, and Outdoor Adventure Club.

Greenfield's long time athletic rivals are the Greendale High School Panthers and the crosstown rivals Whitnall High School Falcons, who joined Greenfield in the Woodland Conference in the 1997–98 school year.

Bands

Greenfield High school has two performance ensemble classes for band. Wind Ensemble, the premiere band ensemble, is open by audition. Those not qualified for wind ensemble may enroll in symphonic band. The pep band plays at football and basketball games. Greenfield has two jazz bands, both of which are auditioned groups. An auditioned pit orchestra performs for school musicals. Greenfield also has a marching band, known as the "Hustlin' Hawks", which began competing in local and state competition in 2012.
