Grace Like Winter

Grace Like Winter was a Christian progressive metal/hardcore punk band from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. They were formed in November 1998, and disbanded for the last time in September 2002.[2] They released records independently and with the Raising the Roof record label. They were notable for having two singers, both of whom were female, as this is a rarity in the hardcore punk community.

History

Grace Like Winter began in November 1998 as a cover band for a friend's birthday party. The original members were Jacqui on vocals, Joel on guitar, Matt on bass, and Murray on drums. In March 1999, Grace Like Winter played their first show with original songs, and a full line-up rounded out with Tanner as a second vocalist and Tom as the bassist (Matt switched to guitar).

After several shows in the spring and summer of 1999, Grace Like Winter released a demo CDR in August, aptly titled Demo 1999. Then in November, one year after their inception, Grace recorded four songs for a split release with another Winnipeg band, From This Day Forward. This split was released in May 2000, and a whirlwind of shows, weekend trips, and a tour of eastern Canada ensued.

After a short hiatus in the winter of 2000/2001, Grace Like Winter reunited for the summer months for more shows, and tours in western and eastern Canada. Another short Demo CDR was recorded and released in August 2001. At this time, Tom decided to leave the band and was replaced with Derek.

Grace Like Winter has had the opportunity to play a number of different venues across Canada, and with a number of different bands, including Poison the Well, The End, Martyr A.D., Grade, Figure Four, The Appleseed Cast, Moneen, and many more.

Style

The band primarily played hardcore punk and progressive metal. While they have also been tagged with the genres of metalcore, punk rock, noise rock, and emo.[1]

The band has been compared to bands such as Zao, Hopesfall, Eso-Charis, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Shai Hulud.[1]

They're a metal-hardcore-punk-emo-noise band from Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. Fronted by two female vocalists (Jacqui and Tanner), and this release can be found on Raising the Roof Records. I'm telling you, the four songs on this comp. by GLW are absolute hardcore mastery. I think that if you're a fan of Dillinger Escape Plan, Shai Hulud, Walls of Jericho, Zao, Eso-Charis, Hopesfall you'd really love this band. They are very talented in all aspects of their music. From off time drumming, beautiful songwriting, insane guitar and very mature screaming/singing. These aren't the kind of girls who seem like their pissed off because it's their "time of the month" as I've heard it crudely put. They have conviction, style and grace to the way they put screaming to lyrics. They are a Christ centered band, but I really hope that doesn't put you off if you're not a Christian, because that would be a shame
