Gowri Koneswaran

Gowri Koneswaran is a queer[1] Tamil American poet, performing artist, teacher, and lawyer whose family immigrated to the U.S. from Sri Lanka.[2] She is a Kundiman fellow.[3]

Performances & Publications

Her poems are available in Split This Rock's The Quarry,[4] Beltway Poetry Quarterly,[5][6] Bourgeon,[7] Lantern Review,[8] Washington City Paper,[9] and On Being.[10] She was also a member of the 2010 D.C. Southern Fried Slam Team[11] and has performed at Lincoln Center Out of Doors,[12] the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage,[13] Smithsonian Folklife Festival,[14] Smithsonian Asian American Literature Festival,[15] and Dakshina/Daniel Phoenix Singh Dance Company events co-sponsored by the Poets & Writers Readings/Workshops program.[16]

Career

Gowri was previously The Humane Society of the U.S.'s Director of Animal Agricultural Impacts and a Program Manager for the Farm Animal Welfare division,.[17] She co-authored the peer-reviewed journal articles "Global Farm Animal Production and Global Warming: Impacting and Mitigating Climate Change"[18] and "The Public Health Impacts of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations on Local Communities."[19]
