Giorgio Marincola (Rome Metro)

Giorgio Marincola is an underground station under construction of Line C of the Rome Metro. The station will be located between two important interchanges of the Roman metro system – the station Fori Imperali-Colosseo (Line B) and San Giovanni (Line A). Construction works started in 2013. The station is expected to become operational with the inauguration of the extension of Line C from San Giovanni to Fori Imperiali-Colosseo in 2024.[1]

During excavation of the station in 2016, a Roman barracks dating back to the 2nd century AD was unearthed 9 metres (30 ft) below street level.[2]

Originally the name Amba Aradam-Ipponio according to the street above was proposed, but the local government decided to name the station after the partisan Giorgio Marincola instead. Amba Aradam was the site of a massacre in Ethiopia by Italian troops. [3]
