Gerard Scholten

Gerard Marie Scholten (23 December 1933 – 24 April 2020) was a Dutch politician of the KVP and later the CDA. He was mayor of Heusden (1966–1976) and Schijndel (1976–1998).[1]

Career

Scholten was born in Borne, where he joined the city council in 1958 and became almost immediately KVP parliamentary leader. In 1962 he became alderman. Scholten was appointed mayor of Heusden in November 1966. He stimulated the restoration of Heusden (fortress). For his effort of the restoration he received the European "Europa-Nostra" award.[1] In 1976 he was appointed mayor of Schijndel. In 1985 he had to deal with bankruptcy and the closure of the stocking factory Jansen de Wit, where many residents worked.[1] Mid 1998 his political career came to an end, after being a mayor for over 31 years.

Gerard Scholten died in 2020, aged 86.[1]
